AD 2026년 그러니까 DD 0년의 한 여름도 이제 몇 일 남지 않았습니다.

세익스피어 원작 ‘한 여름밤의 꿈’은 매우 엉뚱한 꿈 이야기입니다.

그런데 놀랍게도 올해 저와 글로벌 사회는 매우 비슷한 꿈을 현실 속에서 만나고 있습니다.

그 꿈의 시작은 2026년 7월 2째주는 거의 일주일 내내 비가 왔고, 그래서 올해 여름은 이런 식으로 비 많이 오나 했는데 실제로 한여름 내내 비가 소나기조차도 거의 없었고 한 여름이 끝나는 오늘부터 다시 비가 오군요.

왜 이렇게 올해 시작을 알리는 7월 초에 비 소식이 기억나냐 하면, 그 비를 5일 연속 맞으면서 동대문구청 공무원들의 갑질에 시달리며 고생만 하다가 집에 왔기 때문입니다.

그래서 올해 여름은 비 많이 오나 했더니 막상 비 내내 안오고 여름 8월 달력 넘기기 전에야 내일 비가 오는군요.

마찬가지로 그 때만 해도 미국이 이란과 종전한다고 일주일 내내 외신 특보 나와서 그런가 했더니 실제로는 올 여름 내내 종전은 커녕 그 반대 뉴스만 요란한 점도 그렇습니다.

바로 이런 한 여름밤의 환경 속에서 ‘다른랩’이 정동희의 2번째 작품으로 태어난 것입니다.

다르다는 것은 그냥 물리적으로 겉모습이 다르다는 말보다는, 속의 실질이 다르다는 점을 말하고 싶었고 외국인 입장에서도 ‘다르다’는 한국어는 보기에도 어렵지 않고 발음도 비교적 용이하다는 점도 고려했습니다.

DarunLab.com은 이런 배경 속에서 작명되었습니다.

그리고 무엇보다 AD 2026년은 월드타워 층수만큼이나 기형적으로 팽창한 달러 유통량 등이 가져온 경제 및 정치 왜곡 현상이 더 이상 팽배하기에는 그 후유증이 너무나 광범위하고 선의의 피해자들이 속출하고 있다는 점에서, ‘다르다’는 형용사인 ‘다른’ 영어인 Different가 주는 메시지는 너무도 엄청납니다.

바로 DD 0년에서 말하는 DD의 첫번째 D가 영어 Different 이니셜이라는 점은, 이제 이 단어의 반대말인 무차별적인 Indifferent는 더 이상 답이 되지 않음을 웅변적으로 역설하고 있습니다.

이 ‘다르다’가 어떻게 실질적인 의미를 가지고 있는지는 글로벌 집단지성이 같이 고민해야 할 과제이고, DarunLab은 그 연장선 상에서 고민하는 곳입니다.

아무쪼록 Lab 연구소가 궁극적으로는 해법을 찾는 곳인 만큼, DD의 첫 번째 단어가 Definite의 약칭도 될 수 있다고 제가 정의한 만큼, 결정적 해법을 같이 고민해봅시다.

Only a few days remain of midsummer in AD 2026—or Year 0 of DD.

Shakespeare’s original A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a tale of peculiar, whimsical illusions. Yet astonishingly, both the global community and I have been living through a strikingly similar dream in our waking reality this year.

The dream began in the second week of July 2026. It rained almost continuously all week, leading me to believe the entire summer would be drenched in downpours. In reality, hardly a shower fell throughout midsummer, only for the rain to return today as summer draws to a close. The reason those early July rains remain so vivid is that I endured five consecutive days in the downpour, grappling with the power abuse and bureaucratic overreach of Dongdaemun-gu Office officials before returning home exhausted. I had anticipated a rainy season, but midsummer remained dry until tomorrow’s rain, right before turning the August calendar page.

Similarly, back then, international breaking news ran all week projecting an end to the conflict between the United States and Iran. Yet throughout the summer, far from reaching peace, the headlines were filled only with the clamor of the exact opposite.

It was precisely within this midsummer night’s setting that DarunLab was born as Donghee Zheng’s second creation.

To be “different” (다르다, Dareuda) is not merely about outward appearances; it speaks to a fundamental difference in substance. I also considered that the Korean word Dareuda is visually accessible and relatively easy to pronounce for an international audience. This is the background behind the naming of DarunLab.com.

Above all, AD 2026 is a time when the economic and political distortions—spawned by phenomena such as a dollar supply expanded as grotesquely high as the floors of the World Tower—can no longer spread unchecked. The fallout is simply too vast, and innocent victims continue to emerge. In this climate, the message carried by the word “Different” (Darun) holds immense weight.

The fact that the first “D” in “DD Year 0” stands for the initial of “Different” eloquently asserts that its antonym—unprincipled, indifferent complacency—can no longer be the answer.

Exploring how this concept of being “different” takes on real, substantive meaning is a collective challenge for global collective intelligence, and DarunLab is a space dedicated to pursuing that very inquiry.

As a laboratory is ultimately a place to discover solutions—and since I have also defined the first “D” of DD as an abbreviation for Definite—let us work together toward definitive answers.
